Quick answer

On a $90,000 salary in 2026–27, take-home pay is about $70,680 a year, or roughly $2,718 a fortnight, after income tax and the Medicare levy. Your employer pays 12% super on top, and under Payday Super it must reach your fund within 7 business days of each payday.

How your take-home pay is worked out

The calculator turns the pay you enter into a yearly salary, works out the full year's income tax at the 2026–27 resident rates, takes off the low income tax offset, adds the Medicare levy and any HELP repayment, then divides what is left by 12, 26 or 52. It assumes you hold private hospital cover, so no Medicare levy surcharge is included.

Your employer does not use this method. They withhold tax each payday from the ATO's PAYG withholding schedules, which spread the offsets and levy across the year and round each amount. That is why the tax on your pay slip will differ from this estimate by a few dollars a pay. Any difference is squared up when you lodge your tax return.

Super is paid on top of your salary

The super guarantee is 12% of your qualifying earnings in 2026–27. It is paid by your employer into your super fund and is not part of your take-home pay. If your job is advertised as a package that includes super, tick the box above and the calculator will split the figure into salary and super. For example, a $100,800 package is $90,000 salary plus $10,800 super.

Payday Super started on 1 July 2026. Employers now have to pay super each time they pay wages, and the money must reach your fund within 7 business days after payday. Before this, employers could pay super quarterly. You should now see contributions arrive in your fund soon after each pay. If they don't, ask your employer first, then the ATO. Our Payday Super guide for employers explains the new deadlines in more detail.

When the estimate will be off

The result will not match your pay if you have more than one job (only one employer should apply the tax-free threshold), if you salary sacrifice into super, if you receive allowances, bonuses or overtime at irregular times, or if you are a foreign resident or working holiday maker for only part of the year. It also ignores deductions you will claim at tax time, which can lead to a refund.

If you want to see how deductions and withholding net out at year end, use the income tax and refund calculator. For salary packaging or a second job, a quick tax planning review with TXAS can help set the right withholding so you are not hit with a bill later.

Common questions

How much is $90,000 after tax in Australia?

In 2026–27, a $90,000 salary leaves a resident about $70,680 a year after income tax and the Medicare levy. That is roughly $2,718 a fortnight or $1,359 a week, before any HELP repayment. Your employer also pays $10,800 super on top.

How much is $100,000 after tax in Australia?

About $77,480 a year in 2026–27, or $6,457 a month, for a resident with no HELP debt. Tax and Medicare levy come to $22,520.

Is super included in my salary?

Usually not. Most salaries are quoted before super, and the employer pays 12% on top. If your contract says "package" or "including super", divide by 1.12 to find the salary part.

When does my employer have to pay my super now?

From 1 July 2026, super must reach your fund within 7 business days after each payday under Payday Super. For a new employee, the first payment has up to 20 business days.

Why is the tax on my pay slip different from the calculator?

Employers use the ATO withholding schedules, which round amounts and spread offsets across the year, while the calculator works out the exact annual tax and divides it. The gap is normally a few dollars per pay and is settled in your tax return.
